Y'all, we were out on the Rural Road Trip Holiday Edition 2025, and let me tell you… it was PURE Iowa Christmas magic! This is our fourth year doing this trip, and honestly? It just gets better every single time.
From Kalona to Wellman to Sigourney to Oxford and beyond, every stop has been filled with the sweetest small-town charm, handmade gifts, festive décor, cozy boutiques, delicious treats, and shop owners who greet you like family.
This is why I love Rural Iowa SO much.

The Magic of Small-Town Holiday Shopping
We sipped local coffee at charming cafés, wandered through the cutest stores you've ever seen, found the most meaningful holiday treasures (not mass-produced junk, actual treasures), and soaked in all the twinkle lights, greenery, and small-town joy. It honestly feels like stepping straight into a Hallmark movie… but even better because it's our Iowa.
If you've never done the Rural Road Trip, put it on your list for next year. The heart, the hospitality, the magic, it's everything I adore about exploring rural communities and supporting the small businesses that make them shine.
OUR HOLIDAY STOPS: A TOWN-BY-TOWN GUIDE

SIGOURNEY, IOWA: Where Rural Charm Meets Holiday Elegance
Sigourney stole our hearts this year with its beautifully decorated main street and incredible collection of boutiques. This small town punches WAY above its weight when it comes to unique shopping experiences.
Our first stop was Barn Wired, and honestly, starting with their coffee was the perfect move. This isn't your basic small-town coffee shop. This is artisan coffee, cozy vibes, and the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to linger for hours. We grabbed our lattes and got ready to shop!
What We Loved: The locally roasted coffee, the warm welcome, and the fact that they're fueling all us road trippers with quality caffeine. Plus, their holiday drinks? Chef's kiss.
Grant Ranch brought the western charm and holiday spirit in equal measure. If you're looking for home cooking this is your place.
The Feathered Farmhouse was a treasure trove of farmhouse décor, vintage finds, and handmade goodies. Every corner had something that made us say "I need this!"
And then there's Sigourney Mercantile. This place has everything from home goods to gifts to the kind of items that make you rethink your entire living room aesthetic.
Pro Tip: The Mercantile is a must-visit for anyone who loves curated, quality goods with that perfect blend of vintage and modern.
KALONA, IOWA: A Holiday Shopping Paradise
Kalona has always been one of my favorite Rural Road Trip stops, and during the holidays? It's absolutely magical.

Best Of Iowa is exactly what it sounds like, the best products from Iowa artisans, makers, and small businesses all under one roof. We found gorgeous Iowa-made gifts, delicious local treats (those cookies!), and so many items that celebrate everything we love about this state.
What to Get:
Iowa-shaped anything (cookies, ornaments, décor), locally made candles, artisan foods, and gifts that actually mean something.
Poured Candles
If you love candles (and who doesn't?), Poured Candles is your happy place. Hand-poured, beautifully scented, and perfect for gift-giving or just treating yourself to that cozy holiday atmosphere at home.

Vintage lovers, this is your stop. That gorgeous pink storefront that's basically Instagram gold. Inside? Even better. Pink Begonia -The Vintage Society curates the most beautiful collection of vintage and antique items. It's like shopping in your cool aunt's perfectly styled home.

WELLMAN, IOWA: Small Town, Big Heart
Don't let Wellman's size fool you. This tiny town has some serious charm and one of my favorite stops of the entire trip.
Simple Happiness lives up to its name in every possible way. This boutique is filled with items that bring joy—beautiful décor, thoughtful gifts, and the kind of treasures that make your house feel like a home.
The owner greeted us like old friends, and honestly, that's the Rural Road Trip experience in a nutshell. These aren't just stores, they're community gathering places run by people who genuinely care about their customers and their towns.
OXFORD, IOWA & BEYOND
We also made quick stops in Oxford and several other small towns along the way. Each one had its own personality, its own charm, and its own reasons to slow down and explore.
That's the beauty of Rural Iowa—you never know what hidden gem you'll find around the next corner.
WHY THE RURAL ROAD TRIP MATTERS
This trip isn't just about shopping (though that's definitely a perk). It's about:
Supporting Small Businesses: Every dollar you spend in these towns goes directly back into the community. You're not funding a CEO's third yacht—you're helping a local family pay their bills and pursue their dreams.
Preserving Rural Communities: Small businesses are the heartbeat of rural towns. When they thrive, the whole community thrives. Main streets stay vibrant, young people have reasons to stay or come back, and our rural heritage stays alive.
Authentic Experiences: Forget the crowded mall with the same stores in every city. Rural Road Trip stops offer unique products, genuine hospitality, and the kind of shopping experience where you actually enjoy spending money.
Creating Memories: Four years in, and we're still talking about our favorite stops, the incredible people we've met, and the treasures we've found. These experiences become stories we tell for years.
PLANNING YOUR OWN RURAL ROAD TRIP HOLIDAY EDITION
Want to create your own small-town holiday shopping adventure? Here's how:
Pick Your Route: Choose 3-5 small towns within a reasonable driving distance. Check their websites or Facebook pages to see which businesses are participating in holiday events.
Check Hours: Small-town shops often have limited hours, especially during the holidays. Call ahead or check social media to make sure they're open.
Bring Cash: While many places take cards, having cash makes things easier and shows extra support for small businesses.
Plan for Food: Don't just shop, eat local too! Every town has a great café, diner, or restaurant worth trying.
Take Your Time: This isn't a race. The magic happens when you slow down, talk to shop owners, and really experience each place.
Share Your Experience: Tag the businesses on social media, leave reviews, and tell your friends. Word-of-mouth is everything for small-town businesses.
THE HEART OF IT ALL
Small shops. Huge hearts. Holiday magic everywhere.
That's Rural Iowa.
And honestly? That's why I do what I do. Whether it's through City Vibe, Rural Heart, or Culture Compass Consulting, my mission is always the same: to shine a light on the incredible people and businesses that make rural America special.
This Rural Road Trip Holiday Edition reminded me (for the fourth year running) that the best gifts aren't found in big-box stores or on Amazon. They're found in small towns, sold by people who love what they do, wrapped with care, and given with stories attached.
