Your Best Iowa Weekend Getaway Might Be 30 Minutes Away: A Staycation Adventure

Sometimes the best vacations are the ones right in your own backyard. When travel budgets are tight and time is precious, a well-planned staycation can deliver all the relaxation and fun of a weekend getaway without the stress of airports, long drives, or expensive hotels. We proved it with a 24-hour Iowa adventure that cost less than most single-night hotel stays in bigger cities and left us feeling completely refreshed.

Here’s how we turned an ordinary fall weekend into an extraordinary Iowa experience, supporting incredible small businesses every step of the way.

Stop 1: Wilson’s Farms — Where Fall Comes Alive

We kicked off our staycation at Wilson’s Farm, and honestly, if you’re looking for quintessential Iowa autumn vibes, this is it. The moment you pull in, you’re greeted by stunning fall displays that are practically begging for photos. Vintage trucks overflowing with pumpkins, corn stalks swaying in the breeze, and enough mums to make your heart sing.

But we weren’t just there for the aesthetics. Wilson’s Farms has a fantastic cider flight that showcases their craft hard ciders, and let me tell you — it did not disappoint. Four beautiful glasses of golden, amber, and rosy ciders, each with its own distinct flavor profile. Paired with a delicious appetizer, this was the perfect way to ease into vacation mode.

Why Wilson’s Farms works for a staycation:

It’s not just a farm, it’s an experience. From their seasonal events to their commitment to showcasing Iowa agriculture, Wilson’s Farms embodies everything we love about rural America. Plus, supporting a local farm that’s been serving the community for years? That’s the kind of impact our dollars should be making.

Stop 2: The Pink Flamingo — Where the Patio is Always Chef’s Kiss

After soaking in all the fall feels at Wilson’s, we headed to one of our absolute favorite spots: The Pink Flamingo. If you haven’t been, you’re missing out on one of Iowa’s hidden gems.

The Pink Flamingo isn’t just a restaurant — it’s a vibe. The building itself is eye-catching with its bold exterior and tropical touches (yes, flamingos are a thing here, and we are here for it). But the real star? That patio. On a perfect Iowa fall day, there’s nowhere else I’d rather be than sitting outside at The Pink Flamingo with good food, great company, and zero stress.

The menu is packed with crowd-pleasers, and honestly, we’ve never had a bad meal here. Whether you’re craving something hearty or something a little lighter, The Pink Flamingo delivers every single time.

Pro tip: Come for lunch and stay for the ambiance. The Pink Flamingo is the kind of place where you show up for food and end up lingering for hours because you just don’t want to leave.

Stop 3: Bella’s Farmhouse and Venue — Your Cozy Home Away from Home

For our overnight stay, we checked into Bella’s Farmhouse and Venue, and let me just say: this place is magic. If you’re looking for that perfect blend of rustic charm and modern comfort, Bella’s is it.

The property is beautifully maintained, with that authentic farmhouse feel that makes you want to kick off your shoes, pour a glass of wine, and just breathe. The accommodations are clean, cozy, and thoughtfully designed. You get all the charm of staying in the countryside without sacrificing any comfort.

What I love most about Bella’s Farmhouse is that it feels like you’re truly getting away from it all. The peace and quiet, the wide-open spaces, the chance to unplug and just be, it’s exactly what a staycation should be.

Why Bella’s Farms is a staycation winner:

It’s affordable, it’s local, and it’s the kind of place that reminds you why Iowa is such a special place to call home. Supporting small, family-owned lodging options like Bella’s Farms means your money goes directly back into the community and that’s something worth celebrating.

Stop 4: Waveland Cafe in Booneville — Breakfast Done Right

The next morning, we rolled into Waveland Cafe in Booneville, and folks, this is the kind of breakfast spot that makes you understand why small-town diners are the backbone of America.

Waveland serves up a hearty, no-nonsense breakfast that hits the spot every single time. We’re talking perfectly cooked eggs, crispy hash browns, and all the classic diner fare you crave. But the real star of the show? Their Bloody Mary. Hands down one of the best I’ve had. It’s bold, it’s flavorful, and it’s the perfect way to kick off a Sunday morning.

Side note on dive bars with the best Bloody Marys:

I’m a sucker for a great dive bar Bloody Mary, and Iowa has some hidden gems. Places like Waveland prove that you don’t need fancy cocktail bars to get a drink that’s perfectly crafted. Sometimes the best ones come from small-town spots where the bartenders know their regulars by name. There’s something special about the service at these local spots. The staff at Waveland were friendly, attentive, and genuinely happy to have us there. That’s the kind of hospitality that keeps us coming back.

Stop 5: Rose Farm — The Perfect Grand Finale

We wrapped up our staycation adventure at the beautiful Rose Farm. If you’re looking for a place that embodies Iowa charm, this is it.

Rose Farm is stunning — the kind of place where you walk around and feel grateful to live in a state with so much natural beauty. Whether you’re visiting in the spring when everything is blooming or in the fall when the colors are at their peak. Rose Farm offers a peaceful escape and a reminder of why we should all slow down and appreciate the beauty around us. It’s the perfect way to end a staycation — relaxed, refreshed, and ready to take on the week ahead.

Why This Staycation Matters

Here’s the thing: this wasn’t just a fun weekend. It was a reminder that you don’t have to travel far or spend a fortune to have an incredible experience. Iowa is filled with small businesses that are working hard to create memorable experiences for locals and visitors alike. By choosing to staycation and support these businesses, we’re investing in our own communities.

The highlight? Every single stop on this trip was a small business. From the farm experiences to the meals to the overnight stay, we were putting our money directly back into Iowa’s economy. And honestly, that feels just as good as the relaxation and fun we had.
