(Bloody Marys Included!)
There's something magical about Iowa's backroads on a Sunday afternoon. No agenda, no rush, just gravel crunching under your tires, rolling hills painted in endless shades of green, and the promise of discovering something wonderful around every curve. Over the weekend, my parents and I did what we do best: we took the scenic route. And let me tell you, this gravel travel Sunday did not disappoint.
An Iowa Backroads Adventure -The Therapy You Didn't Know You Needed
Forget fancy spas and expensive retreats. Give me a gravel road, good company, and a string of Iowa's best-kept secrets any day. There's something about slowing down, literally and figuratively, that makes everything else fade away. Sunday drives with my parents have become my favorite kind of therapy. No couch, no copay, just quality time and spontaneous adventures.
Stop One: Waveland Café in Booneville – Where Bloody Marys Come with Tiny Beers
First stop: Waveland Café in Booneville, Iowa. Now, I'll be honest, I'm a sucker for a good dive bar with legendary Bloody Marys, and Waveland delivers in the best possible way.
The moment those Bloody Marys arrived at our table, complete with adorable tiny beers on the side, we couldn't help but giggle like kids. There's something about that little beer chaser that just makes you smile.
Is it practical? Probably not. Is it absolutely delightful? 100% yes.
The atmosphere here is pure small-town Iowa: unpretentious, welcoming, and full of character. The kind of place where everybody knows somebody, and newcomers are treated like old friends. If you're looking for Instagram-perfect ambiance, you won't find it here, but if you want authenticity, cold drinks, and that warm fuzzy feeling that comes from genuine hospitality, Waveland Café is your spot.
Pro tip: Come hungry. The food is classic diner comfort, and it pairs perfectly with their famous Bloody Marys.
Stop Two: Covered Bridges Winery – Iowa-Grown Wine That Feels Like a Hug
Next up on our gravel travel adventure: Covered Bridges Winery. Nestled among Iowa's rolling hills, this winery is proof that you don't need to fly to Napa to enjoy exceptional wine and breathtaking views.
Every sip of their flavorful, Iowa-grown wine felt like a hug from those gorgeous hills surrounding us. The vineyard takes pride in their locally-sourced grapes, and you can taste the dedication in every glass. From crisp whites to bold reds, there's something for every palate, even if you're not typically a wine person.
What I love most about Covered Bridges Winery is how it captures the essence of Iowa agriculture with a touch of elegance. The tasting room exudes rustic charm, the staff are knowledgeable without being pretentious, and the whole experience reminds you why supporting local is so important.
Don't miss: Their outdoor seating area. Grab a glass, sink into a chair, and just soak in the view. It's the kind of moment that makes you fall in love with Iowa all over again.
Stop Three: Winterset Cidery – Live Music, Craft Cider & Homemade Cookies
If you've never been to Winterset Cidery, add it to your Iowa bucket list immediately. This place is the definition of small-town charm wrapped up in a cider-soaked bow.
We rolled in to find live music filling the air, craft cider flowing, fresh popcorn popping, and the sweetest homemade cookies you've ever tasted. Honestly, what more could you ask for?
The cidery offers an impressive variety of flavors—from classic apple to creative seasonal blends. Whether you prefer sweet, tart, or somewhere in between, they've got you covered. And those homemade cookies? Chef's kiss. Perfectly soft, perfectly sweet, and the ideal companion to a cold cider.
The vibe here is relaxed and friendly. Families, couples, friend groups, everyone finds their happy place at Winterset Cidery. The live music adds the perfect soundtrack to lazy Sunday afternoons, and the atmosphere encourages you to linger just a little longer.
Insider scoop: Check their social media before you go to see who's playing live music that weekend. The local talent is incredible, and it makes the experience even more special.
Final Stop: The Talk Shop Lounge – The Perfect Ending
We wrapped up our gravel travel Sunday at one of our all-time favorite spots: The Talk Shop Lounge. If you know, you know. And if you don't know yet, let me enlighten you.
The Talk Shop Lounge serves up more incredible Bloody Marys (yes, we're seeing a theme here), but they also have this corn dip that will change your life. I'm not being dramatic. Okay, maybe a little but seriously, it's that good. Pair it with their sandwiches and you've got the perfect ending to a perfect day.
This place has that neighborhood bar feel where everyone's welcome and the staff remembers your usual. It's the kind of establishment that becomes your go-to because it never disappoints. Good food, strong drinks, and the kind of warm atmosphere that makes you want to pull up a stool and stay awhile.
Why Gravel Travel Sundays Matter
Here's the thing about adventures like this: they're not about checking boxes or collecting Instagram posts (though the photos are pretty great). They're about connection; to the land, to your community, to the people you love.
Iowa's backroads are lined with stories waiting to be discovered. Family-owned wineries pouring their hearts into every bottle. Small-town cafés serving up legendary Bloody Marys with a side of laughter. Cideries where homemade cookies and live music create moments you'll remember long after the last sip.
These places aren't just businesses, they're dreams brought to life by passionate people who chose to build something beautiful in rural America. And every time we support them, we're saying "yes" to keeping small-town magic alive.
Your Turn to Hit the Gravel
So here's my challenge to you: pick a Sunday, grab someone you love (or go solo if that's your jam), and take the backroads. Say yes to that random winery sign. Stop at the dive bar with the legendary Bloody Marys. Try the craft cider. Order the corn dip.
Because at the end of the day, life's too short for the interstate. The real magic happens on gravel roads, in small towns, at family tables where strangers become friends and every sip tells a story.
Family, food, drinks, gravel roads, and laughter. What more could you ask for?
